Choosing Character engages students, teachers, administrators, and parents to transform how schools deal with bullying.

Choosing Character is a program designed to create self awareness in students about their behavior, and create more awareness among teachers, parents and administrators about how to address bullying on campus. The Choosing Character program is designed to be more than a single assembly, it's a six part program designed to get students, teachers, administrators and parents on the same page about bullying, substance abuse and mental health. It is designed to be a roadmap for improved school climate and culture.
The program includes a workshop for teachers and administrators, a talk for parents, multiple assemblies for students, facilitated small groups, and a web-based video curriculum to supplement the lessons learned in the assemblies.
The thrust of the program is to help students better understand and contextualize their experiences and behaviors, and develop the skills necessary to make better choices. For parents and administrators, it's fostering understanding about bullying among youth, its causes and effects, and how to take a restorative approach to the issue that will leave students transformed positively from the experience, whether they were doing the bullying or being bullied.
The six parts are as follows:
(1) Restoring the Bully/ied: A workshop for teachers & administrators on the causes and effects of bullying and a restorative approach to dealing with students involved in bullying.
(2) Risky Youth Behavior: A keynote speech for parents to help the understand the challenges of youth, align them with the message being taught in the school, and helps them understand how to talk to their kids about risky behavior (bullying, drugs[when appropriate]), and how to teach their kids appropriate coping skills.
(3) Choosing Character Assemblies: (1) Keynote assembly for youth about bullying and making better choices, (2) Choosing Character Assembly Two about Social Media, Comparison, and Self-Image.
(4) Character Course: A six (6) lesson , video-led course the covers the following: helping students create a vision for what they would like their life to be; a character development module that allows them to "choose" their character and assign traits; a lesson in internal dialogue to help them develop an positive internal dialogue; a module to help them learn to identify emotions; a lesson on coping skills; and a lesson guiding them in the development of a personal character statement/affirmation.
(5) "I Know I Can" Self-Confidence Assembly: This assembly teaches students why the should be self-confident, provides tools for building confidence, and teaches about the work ethic that it will take to be successful.
(6) Small group discussions / classroom specific talks: In these groups/talks, Caliph meets with individual teachers to better understand the needs their classroom, and speaks directly to those needs. Or, he works with a small group of Tier 3 students to reinforce the message of the program.
This program gets the entire school community on the same page and speaking the same language about bullying and other topics and ensures that Caliph becomes a regular presence in campus, allowing the campus to drawn the momentum created by his assemblies and provide numerous follow-up opportunities with students.
